Joel Robert Waterman is a Canadian soccer player who plays as a centre-back, right-back, or defensive midfielder for Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer and the Canada national team. Born in Surrey, British Columbia, to Trent and Vicki Waterman, he moved with his family to Aldergrove at age two and began playing soccer at five with Aldergrove YSA, while also participating in hockey, basketball, volleyball, and golf.
Waterman progressed through youth soccer to professional ranks, winning the Canadian Championship (Voyageurs Cup) with CF Montréal in 2021 before joining Chicago Fire. Internationally, he represented Canada at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and at the 2024 Copa América, where Canada finished fourth. Known for his versatility, leadership, and defensive skill, Waterman is also interested in philanthropy, fashion, and reading, and has cited Steven Gerrard, Virgil van Dijk, Sergio Ramos, and Liverpool FC, as well as LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, among his sporting inspirations.
