Jesse Marsch is indeed an American soccer coach and former player, but he is not currently the head coach of the Canada men’s national team. Instead, Marsch is a well-known figure in the world of soccer coaching and has worked with various high-profile clubs.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Marsch moved into coaching, where he achieved notable success in both domestic and international competitions.
-
New York Red Bulls (2015–2018):
-
Marsch’s coaching career really took off with the New York Red Bulls in MLS. He was known for implementing a high-energy, pressing style, known as “gegenpressing”, similar to that used by his former mentor Jürgen Klopp.
-
He led the Red Bulls to Supporters’ Shield titles in 2015 and 2018, which is awarded to the team with the best regular-season record in MLS.
-
-
Red Bull Salzburg (2019–2021):
-
Marsch moved to Austria to coach Red Bull Salzburg, one of the top clubs in the Austrian Bundesliga. His tenure there was successful, winning the Austrian Bundesliga title and continuing Salzburg’s dominance in Austrian football.
-
He also guided Salzburg in UEFA Champions League competition, further enhancing his reputation in European football.
-
-
Leeds United (2022–2023):
-
In 2022, Marsch made the leap to the Premier League, taking over Leeds United after Marcelo Bielsa’s departure. He inherited a team that had been playing Bielsa’s high-octane, attacking style and tried to implement a version of gegenpressing while also focusing on defensive stability.
-
Unfortunately, his tenure at Leeds United was brief, and he was let go in early 2023 after the team struggled in the league.

-
Canada National Team:
-
While there was some speculation about Jesse Marsch potentially becoming the head coach of the Canada men’s national team, as of now, that position is held by John Herdman, who led the team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup after an impressive qualification campaign.
-
Herdman remains the current head coach, and Marsch has not been involved with Canada’s national team.
